Lisboeta

Design

‘Lisboeta’ is a cookbook by renowned chef Nuno Mendes of Taberna do Mercado. Appealing to professional chefs and amateur cooks alike, it also aims to inspire readers to visit Nuno’s home city of Lisbon. We worked with the Bloomsbury editorial team to restructure the book so that Nuno’s travel essays were interspersed throughout, rather than being ‘lost in the back’ — their previously planned position. Creating these deliberate interruptions (and placing them on custom cropped pages) could then encourage readers to become fully immersed in Nuno’s world. Steering clear of clichéd Portuguese design references, we also took a fresh, contemporary approach to the typography and layout. Dia was used in differing weights across headlines and body copy alike (most apparent in the title itself, which wraps around the cover), while essays and chapter contents pages were set in Monospace, a subtle reference to the disposable menus so often found in the old town’s Tabernas.
